- 3 pounds potatoes peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks (about 12 medium potatoes)
- Salted water for boiling
- 1/2 cup butter cut into chunks
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Peel and rinse the potatoes, then cut them into 1-inch chunks.
Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with water. Generously salt the water.
Bring to a boil and cook for 10–13 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the warm pot.
Add the chunked butter, milk, salt, and black pepper.
Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until the larger chunks are gone and the ingredients are well combined.
Using a hand mixer on medium speed, whip the potatoes for up to 1 minute, stopping as soon as they are smooth and fluffy. Do not overmix. They could turn gummy.
Serve immediately with extra butter or top with your favorite gravy.
Russet potatoes will give you an especially light and fluffy texture.
- Yukon Gold potatoes make a naturally buttery, creamy mashed potato.
- Make sure the potatoes are completely tender before draining them.
- Drain the potatoes thoroughly to prevent watery mashed potatoes.
- Avoid overmixing with the hand mixer, which can make mashed potatoes gummy.
- Add a small splash of additional milk if you prefer a softer consistency. Be careful not to add too much!
